Experiencing breathing difficulties? What to do if you have COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a medical term that covers a broad range of lung conditions which cause breathing difficulties. COPD can refer to a number of specific illnesses, such as refractory asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Wednesday 15th November marks World COPD Day – an event organised by the British Lung Foundation (BLF) in the middle of COPD Awareness Month, which runs throughout November.

Earlier this year, Pharmacyoutlet commissioned its own independent research into asthma and COPD issues.

Alarmingly, we found that the number of people in the UK who reported breathing difficulties (typically associated with these lung conditions) was on the rise; it has gone from 6% in 2012 to 12% today, representing 6.2 million people currently suffering from regular respiratory problems.

The research uncovered further cause for concern: it showed that 9% of all UK adults who say they have never been diagnosed with asthma or COPD still suffer from the major symptoms on a regular basis – that’s 3.7 million potential asthmatics who are living without the suitable medication.

It’s a common problem and one that, as British cities and even rural areas become more polluted, is becoming yet more acute.

Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can combat COPD. The first thing to do is check if you do suffer with any specific lung conditions that can be treated – you can take the BLF’s Breath Test hereor visit your GP or pharmacist for their expert advice.

For those who are asthmatic or have another COPD-related condition, one of the most common medical treatments is to use an inhaler. And thanks to the NHS’s Electronic Prescription Service (EPS), COPD sufferers can have their prescriptions delivered directly to their door, meaning they will always have the medication they require in case their breathing difficulties become more severe, which can happen during the winter months.

Simply register with Pharmacy Outlet and let us deliver your NHS prescription to your door – the process is quick and simple, so sign up today by clicking here.
