Love it or loathe it: Why Christmas fills some people with dread
There’s a nip in the air, the pubs smell of mulled wine and tinsel can be seen in people’s homes. It’s official: Christmas has arrived. In fact, it’s just “12 sleeps” away!
However, while the festive season is typically considered to be a time of joy and celebration, for many people it is a time of added strains on their mental and physical health, dampening their mood. Indeed, Pharmacy Outlet recently commissioned research among more than 2,000 Brits which revealed that 30% of adults across the UK – 15.5 million people – secretly dread the Christmas and New Year period because they suffer from increased stress levels.
Among the main stresses and pressures people face at this time of year include buying presents, attending more social functions, managing their finances and coping with excessive food and drink intake. As a result, 60% of people say that they are at their least healthy during the Christmas period due to busier schedules, over-indulgence and the higher risk of colds and flus. What’s more, 16% of people sleep worse at Christmas than at any other time of the year, while 20% suffer from nausea, indigestion and heartburn on a regular basis over the festive season as they consume more food and alcohol. Thankfully, Pharmacy Outlet can help people looking to combat colds, sleep issues or digestion problems .
With anxieties surrounding the impact of the festive season on their health, it’s not surprising that almost a quarter of people (23%) say they are already planning a new health and fitness regime to start in January to reverse Christmas’ over-indulgence.
Ultimately, Christmas does not need to be stressful. Pharmacy Outlet’s advice is to do everything in moderation; you don’t need to break the bank or your liver to enjoy the fortnight that lies ahead, simply embrace the opportunity to spend time with friends and family without going to needless excesses.
