Why do I need this medicine?
Sodium Picosulfate helps to relieve constipation.
Sodium Picosulfate belongs to a group of medicines called stimulant laxatives. Stimulant laxatives increase bowel movement by stimulating the muscles of the bowel.
Sodium Picosulfate is also used for bowel cleansing before bowel examinations or surgery.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Sodium Picosulfate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with a glass of water.
If you have been given oral liquid, use the measuring spoon to measure out your prescribed dose. Shake the oral liquid well before use.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Sodium Picosulfate and alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:
- severe dehydration
- paralytic ileus (a condition where the small bowel does not work properly)
- obstruction of the intestine (gut)
- serious abdominal conditions such as appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix)
- abdominal pain with nausea or vomiting
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have inflammation of the bowel (small or large intestine).
The liquid formulation may contain alcohol. Alert your doctor if you have:
- an addiction to alcohol
- liver disease
- epilepsy (fits)
Unless instructed by your doctor, Sodium Picosulfate should not be taken on a continual basis for a prolonged period of time.
Sodium Picosulfate should not be given to children less than 10 years unless recommended by the doctor.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, especially if you are taking the liquid formulation.
What side effects could I experience?
The common side effects of Sodium Picosulfate include abdominal discomfort, cramps or pain and diarrhoea.
Alert your doctor if prolonged constipation occurs while on Sodium Picosulfate.
Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Sodium Picosulfate.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:
- steroid medicines such as prednisone
- diuretics (water tablets) such as hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide
- cardiac glycosides (heart medicines) such as digoxin
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
How should I store this medicine?
Store the capsules above 25°C.
Store the tablets and oral liquid in a cool and dry place.
Keep this medicine away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
