Numark Sodium Bicarbonate is an antacid used for the relief of indigestion.
Dosage: Powder for oral use.
Adults and children over 12 years:
Take 1g-5g dissolved in a glass of warm water. A level 5ml spoon holds about 5g. this dose can be taken every 4 to 6 hours. When dissolved in water use within 30 minutes.
May cause stomach cramps and wind, if you notice these or any other side effects stop using and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Active ingredient: Sodium Bicarbonate 100%.
Why do I need this medicine?
Sodium Bicarbonate is used to treat acidic conditions of the blood and urine.
It is also used as an antacid to balance excess stomach acidity.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Sodium Bicarbonate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Follow your doctors instructions carefully.
Take Sodium Bicarbonate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, or if you have salt abnormalities in your blood.
Alert your doctor if you are on steroid therapy or if you have water retention causing your feet or legs to swell.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
It is not advisable to take Sodium Bicarbonate as an antacid for the long term treatment of stomach acidity.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are taking Sodium Bicarbonate to treat acidic conditions of the blood or urine, you may need to have regular blood tests to monitor your condition. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.
What side effects could I experience?
You may experience bloatedness of the stomach and excessive gas production (flatulence). However serious side effects with Sodium Bicarbonate generally occur only when it is taken in large doses.
Other side effects are not common. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of these side effects:
-irritability and confusion
-water retention resulting in swelling of the legs and/or feet
-muscle spasms and/or tremors
-difficulty in breathing
Can I take this with other medicines?
Sodium Bicarbonate should not be taken at the same time as iron tablets, as this may result in decreased absorption of iron. Take the iron tablets at least 2 hours after you have taken Sodium Bicarbonate.
Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:
- heart medications such as flecainide, quinidine
- lithium (a mood medicine)
- tetracyclines (antibiotics)
- chlorpropamide (diabetes medicine)
- salicylates (e.g. aspirin)
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
