Why do I need this medicine?
Doxazosin is used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland in men. This enlargement of the prostate gland is called Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). The enlarged prostate gland may cause problems when you pass urine.

Doxazosin relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland and bladder. This helps to improve symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, slow or interrupted flow of urine, frequent urination and dribbling after passing urine.

Doxazosin may also be used on its own or together with other medicines in the treatment of high blood pressure. Doxazosin helps to lower the blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Doxazosin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Doxazosin with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

If you have been given the extended-release tablet (usually marked as "XL"), swallow it whole with breakfast. Do not cut, crush or chew the tablet.

Doxazosin must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking Doxazosin even when there are signs of improvement. Do not stop taking Doxazosin unless instructed by the doctor.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you or your family members have ever had prostate cancer.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Doxazosin.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Doxazosin.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, chest pain (angina), low blood pressure, chronic constipation, narrowing or blockage in your digestive system, or any other illnesses.

Your doctor needs to monitor your blood pressure regularly, especially when you first start treatment with Doxazosin or if your dose has been adjusted. Always keep your appointments with your doctor.

If you are taking the extended-release ("XL") type of Doxazosin, you may see a small tablet-shaped casing in your bowel movements. This is normal; do not be alarmed. This casing is just an empty shell; the medicine inside it has already been absorbed by your body.

What side effects could I experience?
Common side effects of Doxazosin include dizziness, tiredness, headache, stomach pain, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhoea and water retention.

You may feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Doxazosin for the first time. This is normal and should improve gradually as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. If you are taking Doxazosin for the very first time, take the first dose just before you sleep. Thereafter, follow your doctor's instructions about how to take Doxazosin.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, breathing difficulties, an erection that is painful or an erection that lasts for several hours.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Doxazosin if you have taken similar medicines such as terazosin or prazosin.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- medicines for high blood pressure such as enalapril, atenolol or nifedipine
- medicines for treatment of erection problems like taladafil, sildenafil or vardenafil
- medicines which act on the digestive system such as domperidone or chlordiazepoxide

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
