Why do I need this medicine?
Sodium Clodronate is used to treat bone diseases that occur together with certain types of cancers.

Certain types of cancers cause the calcium in your bones to leak out into the bloodstream. This can cause problems such as weak bones, fractures, bone pain and metabolic disturbances.

Sodium Clodronate helps to prevent calcium from leaking out of your bones. It helps to strengthen your bones and reduce the chances of getting fractures and bone pain. It also helps to lower the level of calcium in the bloodstream -- this helps to prevent metabolic disturbances.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Sodium Clodronate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Sodium Clodronate must be taken regularly for it to work well. You may need to take Sodium Clodronate for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue taking Sodium Clodronate even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

Take Sodium Clodronate first thing in the morning. Take it with a full glass of plain water on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after food. Do not take Sodium Clodronate with any milk or food. Do not take it at the same time as any other medication.

Swallow it whole. Do not suck, chew, crush or open the tablet or capsule.

IF your doctor has asked you to take Sodium Clodronate as morning and evening doses (instead of a single morning dose), take the evening dose with a full glass of plain water at least 2 hours after any other drink, food or medication. Do not eat or drink (except plain water) for 1 hour after taking Sodium Clodronate.

It is important to follow these instructions carefully. Sodium Clodronate may cause severe irritation to the gullet (food pipe) and stomach if not taken properly. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Sodium Clodronate if you are pregnant. Sodium Clodronate can cause harm to the unborn baby. Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Sodium Clodronate.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Sodium Clodronate passes into the breast milk. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Sodium Clodronate.

Alert your doctor if you are taking other similar medicines such as pamidronate, alendronate, risedronate or zoledronate.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, difficulty swallowing, diseases of the gullet (food pipe) or if you are on a low salt diet.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Sodium Clodronate.

Sodium Clodronate may cause your jaw bones to weaken. You may experience dental problems such as jaw pain, loose or shaky teeth. Avoid dental surgery while being treated with Sodium Clodronate. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene while being treated with Sodium Clodronate. Your doctor may recommend that you have a dental check-up before starting you on this medicine.
Alert your doctor and dentist if you:
- develop a tooth infection
- develop pain, numbness or discomfort in your teeth or gums
- have a tooth extraction

You will need to have regular blood tests to check your calcium levels and kidney function. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.

Ensure that you do not become dehydrated when undergoing treatment with Sodium Clodronate. Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Check with your doctor about how much fluid you must take during treatment with Sodium Clodronate.

What side effects could I experience?
Common side effects of Sodium Clodronate include joint or muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, bloating, flatulence (wind) and diarrhoea. It may also cause rashes.

Alert your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- medicines which contain magnesium, calcium, phosphate or iron, such as multivitamins
- antacids
- painkillers of the NSAIDS type for example aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac
- aminoglycosides (a group of antibiotics)

Do not take Sodium Clodronate if you are taking other similar medicines such as pamidronate, alendronate, risedronate or zoledronate.

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Do not take any food, milk products, beverages or medicines within 1 hour of taking Sodium Clodronate. These will reduce the amount of Sodium Clodronate absorbed into your body.

Avoid alcohol.
