Why do I need this medicine?
This medicine contains 2 antibiotics called Flucloxacillin and Ampicillin.

This combination of Flucloxacillin and Ampicillin is also known as Co-Fluampicil. This medicine belongs to a group of antibiotics called the penicillins.

Co-Fluampicil is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin or bladder.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Co-Fluampicil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Co-Fluampicil at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Take Co-Fluampicil on an empty stomach at least half an hour to 1 hour before meals. This will help to improve the absorption of Co-Fluampicil.

If you have been given capsules, swallow them whole with plenty of water.

If you have been give an oral suspension or syrup, shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The oral suspension or syrup may be supplied in the form of a dry powder which needs to be mixed with water before use. Your pharmacist may do this for you, or she may teach you how to mix this up. Follow the instructions carefully.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cloxacillin, penicillin V, sultamicillin or any other penicillin antibiotics.

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics such as cefaclor, cefalexin or cefuroxime. Cephalosporins are related to penicillins and if you are allergic to cephalosporins, you may also be allergic to Co-Fluampicil.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have:

- kidney or liver disease
- glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis)
- blood disorders

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are going for a liver function test, inform your doctor that you are taking Co-Fluampicil as this medicine can interfere with the outcome of the test.

What side effects could I experience?
You may have diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and stomach wind while being treated with Co-Fluampicil. These side effects are usually mild and will get better with rest. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking allopurinol or probenecid.

Do not take antacids together with Co-Fluampicil. Antacids could reduce the effectiveness of Co-Fluampicil. If you must take antacids, take them at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Co-Fluampicil.

Inform your doctor if you are taking birth-control pills that contain oestrogen. Co-Fluampicil may decrease the effectiveness of these pills. You may wish to discuss additional birth-control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.
