Why do I need this medicine?
Ribavirin is an anti-viral medicine.

It is used together with other medicines to treat long-term hepatitis C infection.

Ribavirin does not prevent you from passing the disease to other people.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Ribavirin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Ribavirin at regular intervals as directed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.

Ribavirin is available as a tablet or capsule.

If you have been given the tablet, take it with food.

If you have been given the capsule, you may take it either always with or always without food.

Always take Ribavirin with plenty of water.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, breathing problems or other kinds of liver disease in addition to hepatitis.

Alert your doctor if you have blood disorders such as anaemia or thalassaemia.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You must avoid pregnancy while being treated with Ribavirin and for at least 6 months after you complete treatment. Both men and women being treated with Ribavirin must use at least 2 reliable types of birth control during treatment AND for at least 6 months after treatment ends.

If you are a man being treated with Ribavirin and your wife or partner is pregnant, you must not take Ribavirin. Alert your doctor quickly.

Pregnancy testing should be done every month during treatment with Ribavirin and for 6 months after treatment has stopped.

Do not breastfeed while being treated with Ribavirin.

If your child or teenager is being treated with Ribavirin, and has a history of psychiatric disorders, alert the doctor.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease, mood disorders or psychiatric problems.

For as long as you are being treated with Ribavirin, you will need to have regular blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need these tests to be done.

By itself, Ribavirin cannot treat hepatitis C. Make sure that you take the other medicine(s) given to you by your doctor.

Ribavirin does not prevent you from passing hepatitis C to other people. Follow your doctor's advice about how to prevent spreading the disease to others.

What side effects could I experience?
Ribavirin may cause flu-like symptoms and dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Alert your doctor quickly if you develop mood swings, depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, unusual irritability or problems sleeping.

Ribavirin may also cause stomach discomfort, tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, rashes, itch and cough.

Other side effects are not common, but may be more serious. Stop the medicine and alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of these side effects:
