Why do I need this medicine?
Lamotrigine is used to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures). It may be used on its own or together with other epilepsy medicines.

It is also used to treat a mood disturbance called bipolar disorder.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Lamotrigine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Continue taking Lamotrigine even when you feel better. Lamotrigine is not a cure and you may need to take it long-term to keep the seizures under control. Do not skip any doses. Do not stop taking Lamotrigine unless instructed by your doctor.

You may take Lamotrigine with or without food. Take it with plenty of water.

Lamotrigine is available as normal tablets, which should be swallowed with water. It is also available as a chewable or dispersible tablet.

If you have been given the chewable or dispersible tablet, you may swallow, chew or dissolve it in water. If you dissolve it in water, make sure that you drink the entire glass of water to get the full dose.

Ask your doctor which type of tablet you have been given and how it should be taken.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

Remember to take your medicine regularly. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Lamotrigine. You may need to take folate supplements if you are pregnant while being treated with Lamotrigine.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Lamotrigine.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart disease, or Parkinson's disease.

Alert your doctor if you have recently taken or are still taking other epilepsy medicines, especially sodium valproate.

Alert your doctor if there is no improvement in seizure control.

What side effects could I experience?
Lamotrigine may cause dizziness, drowsiness and blurred vision. If you feel dizzy, drowsy or cannot see clearly, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Common side effects of Lamotrigine include headache, tiredness, nausea, anxiety, problems sleeping and back pain.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes, changes in menstrual cycle or any unexplained rashes.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- other epilepsy medicines, such as sodium valproate, carbamazepine, phenytoin or primidone
- TB medicine such as rifampicin
- antiviral medicine such as ritonavir
- sleeping pills
- hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Alert your doctor if you are currently taking birth control pills as this can reduce the effectiveness of Lamotrigine. You should not stop or start any birth control pills without first informing your doctor. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control as an alternative while being treated with Lamotrigine.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol and evening primrose oil.

How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
