Why do I need this medicine?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the nose, throat, chest, ears, skin, bladder, bones, joints and brain. Cefuroxime is also used to treat a sexually-transmitted disease known as gonorrhoea.

Cefuroxime belongs to a group of antibiotics called the cephalosporins.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Cefuroxime exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Cefuroxime at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Take Cefuroxime together with food or immediately after a meal.

If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole. Do not chew or crush the tablets because the crushed tablet has a strong bitter taste.

If you have been given an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rash, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as cefalexin, cefaclor, cefixime, ceftibuten or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin antibiotics, for example, amoxicillin, ampicillin and cloxacillin. Penicillins are related to cephalosporins and if you are allergic to one, you may be allergic to the other too.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have kidney or bowel disease, especially colitis (inflammation of the colon).

This medicine may not be suitable for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss this with your doctor.

If you are being treated with Cefuroxime for gonorrhoea, you should follow your doctor's advice on ways to prevent passing the disease to others. You should also avoid sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared of the infection.

What side effects could I experience?
You may have diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort and headache while being treated with Cefuroxime. These side effects are usually mild and should get better with rest. Take Cefuroxime with or immediately after food to reduce the nausea and stomach discomfort. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Cefuroxime together with antacids because antacids could reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Antacids are not likely to relieve the stomach discomfort that Cefuroxime may cause. If you must take antacids, take between meals at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after you have taken Cefuroxime.

Alert your doctor if you are taking warfarin or probenecid.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8
